Atop Skinner Hill
The terrain of most of Chenango County, New York, is one of north-south valleys and ridges, with the ridgetops all at about the same elevation. From most ridgetops, about the farthest one can see is into adjacent valleys and beyond to the next ridges. But there are some places, like this one, that pop up above the general maximum, affording much more distant views. That is especially the case in late fall or early spring, when there isn't enough snow on the ground to make access difficult nor enough leaves on the trees to mask the view.
According to the USGS "Geographic Names Information System," Skinner Hill's summit is 1,968 feet above sea level, 20 feet lower than Pigeon Hill over on the other side of Norwich, and is the second-highest point in the county. Its coordinates, in Google Earth friendly format, are
42 38 04N 075 25 48W .
