This is the backstop at the hilltop baseball field where my gang of friends and I would play ball from dew-wet morning to late-fading sun in the summer, if our parents would let us. It is adjacent to the Gibson elementary school, hard by Chenango Memorial Hospital, in Norwich, New York. I took this photo on my last trip to Chenango County, eight years ago. That trip was a solitary journey, but not alone: I went to scatter my parents' ashes.
